Cutoffs — quick answers

How much do cutoffs shift from year to year? +

Enough to matter. A closing rank of ~5,500 for NIT Trichy CSE (TN home-state quota) one year can move by a thousand or more the next, depending on paper difficulty and how many students apply. Treat every figure on this page as a planning benchmark, not a guarantee — always cross-check the current year's official opening/closing ranks before finalising choices.

Why do OBC-NCL, SC, and ST cutoffs look so different from General? +

Reserved categories compete within their own rank pool, which is smaller, so the same seat closes at a much higher (numerically worse) rank. As a rough multiplier: OBC-NCL closing ranks run roughly 2–3× the General rank, SC roughly 5–8×, and ST roughly 12–15×. This means a rank that looks "out of reach" for General can be well within range for a reserved category.

Should I build my college list around only my dream colleges? +

No — build three tiers: dream colleges (10–15% realistic chance), target colleges (50–60% chance), and safe colleges (90%+ chance). Never fill a list of only dream colleges, and never drop them either — a gap between your current mock rank and your final exam rank can close with 3–6 months of focused work.
